ROBOTS THRU THE MAZE RULES PURPOSE: To promote robotics research and
development with a fair contest of speed and intelligence.
CONTEST NOTICE: A Notice shall be published in advanced with the following
information; a) Date of Contest, b) Time of Contest, c) Place of
Contest, d) Prizes, e) Entry Deadline, f) Entry Form, g) Entry Fee,
Description of the Maze including; h) Overall Size, i) Wall Height,
j) Wall Thickness k) Path Width, l) Running Surface, m) Entrance and
Exit, Description of the Contest including; n) Time Limit, o) Numbers
of Runs, p) Penalty, q) Special Rules.
DEFINITIONS Contestant: The
robot that runs the maze. Owner: The person that owns the robot.
Handler: The person that handles the robot in the staging area.
Staging area: The impound area for contestants, including the maze, a
work area with electrical outlets and a tryout area. Maze: The maze
is a set of walls placed on the running surface. The maze has path
width passages, formed by the walls, between the entrance and exit.
Maze judge: The maze judge is responsible for the execution of the
rules. The decisions of the maze judge are final. The maze judge
shall be knowledgable in the rules and in robotics, and cannot be the
owner of a contestant. Robot: A self governing object made or
modified by the owner. The robot shall not pose a hazard to any
person or property. On-deck: A one time limit period before the
start. Start: When any part of the contestant enters the maze.
Finish: When any part of the contestant exit the maze.
CONTEST PROCEDURE: 1) All contestants shall be in the staging area before the
time of contest, and shall remain in the staging area until released
by the maze judge. 2) The starting sequence for each run shall be
assigned by random drawing. 3) The maze judge shall announce the
on-deck contestant. 4) The handler shall have one time limit to
prepare the contestant for the start. 5) The maze judge may allow
the contestant to start before the time limit. 6) Run time starts
when the contestant starts or one time limit after on-deck warning.
7) The maze judge may disqualify any contestant for rule violation.
8) A contestant may not move any wall to its advantage. 9) There
shall be no human contact with the contestant while running the maze.
10) Run time stops when the contestant finishes or after one time
limit of run time. 11) After the run the handler shall promptly clear
the contestant from the maze area.
SCORING The prizes shall be
awarded to owners of the contestants with the lowest maze scores,
that complete at least one run. The maze score is the sum of the run
scores. The run score for contestants that are disqualified is one
time limit plus four penalties. The run score for contestants that
do not start is one time limit plus two penalties. The run score for
contestants that start but do not finish is one time limit plus one
penalty. The run score for contestants that finish is the run time.
